Why Did He Still Have Faith?
There was this pureness in his eyes as he spoke. A gentle soul with a heart full of strength. The inspiring Nick Vujicic has taught millions around the world how God provided him with faith and a purpose to keep living regardless of his condition.
“I love my life. As you can see, I have no arms and no legs. But I didn’t think it was such a big deal until the world told me that I was an alien, that I was ugly that I wasn’t good enough.” These were the words Nick spoke in a short snippet interview on his Instagram page.
Something striking stood out from Nick’s testimony that made me think about Adam and Eve. When Nick said, “But I didn’t think it was such a big deal, until the world told me that I was an alien, that I was ugly, that I wasn’t good enough.”
This sounds oddly familiar to Genesis 3:9–11 when God was searching for Adam. Verse 9, but the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” Verse 10, He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.” Verse 11, and God said, “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?
I’ve noticed that when God was searching and calling for Adam in the garden, it was a state of emergency. That’s why I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this message was in the verses between 9–11. Whenever the Lord calls for us, we should never take it lightly. The Lord our God is intentional in everything that he does. When he calls us, it is an emergency for His Kingdom. I wonder how many of us are hiding from our calling because we listened to the world and ate from its tree of lies.
Nick testified that he didn’t see anything wrong with him not having arms and legs until the world told him. Just as Adam didn’t know that he was naked until the world had told him. As humans, we have a terrible way of not listening to the Lord when he tells us who we are first. Psalm 139:14 says we are fearfully and wonderfully made. This means that every individual was handcrafted uniquely. Nick, however, did not believe this at first. Instead, he questioned God and even tried to commit suicide by drowning himself.
It wasn’t until Nick read the Gospel of John that his life would change. The story of a blind man who was born blind. Jesus’s disciples asked him who had sinned, the man or his parents. Since he was born blind. Jesus replied that neither the man nor his parents had sinned but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. God had surely displayed his works in Nick’s life. He was a walking miracle… perhaps not completely but he was a miracle!
So, why did Nick still have faith? Because Nick knew that his strength did not come from having arms or legs but God had placed a type of strength that was priceless right in his heart. Nick stopped hiding and listening to the world and answered God’s emergency call on his life. God has taken Nick to 78 countries, 3500 speeches, 9.7 million people face to face, and 1.2 million people gave their lives to Jesus Christ.
Now that is something to live for!
